So a question that we often get asked is “Will going out and crushing ten beers on a weekend ruin all of my hard work in the gym?”
Sometimes I honestly think the majority of the people who ask this question are just searching for the answer “yeah crack on”.
But like everything, it depends.
This time of the year especially is like a minefield with Christmas parties left right and centre and mulled wine being bandied around like it’s no-one’s business.
I totally get it that it’s probably highly unrealistic (and probably very boring) of us to expect you not to drink over the festive period, however being mindful is what you are after.
As the age-old cliché goes “it’s not what you eat and drink between Christmas and New Year, it’s what you eat and drink between New Year and Christmas that counts”.
If you are having a few glasses of red wine with dinner a couple of nights a week then you probably have nothing to worry about.
I’m sure that you have even read about the health benefits of red wine.
But if you are hitting it consistently hard every weekend then yes, your performance in the gym will inevitably be diminished.
And your results will be limited.
You’ll train badly and most of all, recover poorly.
A night on the pop dehydrates you, causes you to make poor food choices and negatively affects your sleep.
All things that affect your ability to recover from training.
Alcohol affects your hormones and preoccupies your liver.
Both of which are hugely undesirable for fat loss.
If you want to get into shape, stay off the sauce.
A glass of wine or two is fine.
But a night on the tiles will almost definitely ruin your gainz.
