Q. What have Chess, Swingball, naked Twister and Connect 4 got in common?
A. They can all be done solo but they’re always better with a partner.
The same can be said for exercise too.
Recently, Bob, Foxy and I have started training together again and the difference it has made is significant. The intensity has gone through the roof and there’s a much better focus during the session.
Having one of them shout at you if you’re 15 seconds over your rest period or taking the exercise too quickly is a sure way to remain concentrated on the task ahead.
This has reminded me that when you hold yourself accountable to someone the results will always improve.
There’s been no delaying sessions, no skipping workouts and the food has been spot on. Of course, the sessions are hard, but the others boys are there to drag you if you’re struggling toward the end.
I definitely strive to better myself session by session under the watchful eyes of Bert & Ernie. And the same can be said for them.
Find a friend
Buddying up with someone could give your workouts the vital ingredient it’s been missing.
It’s easy to go the gym and ‘spin the wheels’.
Longer rest periods, texting (btw, If I ever see someone do this at W10 your phone will be thrown against the wall!), stopping that one rep short and cutting the workout short, are all common pitfalls that every trainee experiences at one time or another.
A training partner will stop all of this.
Everyone works better when someone is watching. Just go to your high street gym and look at the guys who ‘puff’ their chest and squeeze that last rep out when an attractive female walks past. Sad I know, but true.
Everyone has got that extra 5-10%, it’s just about finding what makes it come out.
Friendly competition amongst each other is healthy.
Never is it more apparent than in our conditioning hub sessions.
If someone in an earlier class has set the fastest time of the day for example, it pushes everyone in the later sessions to beat it. Miraculously people find that extra gear when they have something to work towards.
If you cannot find a partner then at least find yourself a gym where likeminded people train.
There’s nothing worse than going in for a hard session and the person on your left is huffing and puffing dragging their arse through the workout. The environment that you choose can drastically change your workouts.
We are very fortunate in that sense, in that everyone who trains at W10 is here for the same common goal and proud of the W10 gym culture. Everyone is focused, and for that hour a day, they blank everything else out and give it all they’ve got, which benefits them as well as everyone else.
Pick the right space, surround yourself with like-minded people, and see your results accelerate.
